Fixing a Running Toilet
A running toilet usually means the flapper isn’t sealing properly. Turn off the water, drain the tank, and replace the flapper (cheap and easy to find at any hardware store).
Realigning a Sticking Door
If a door sticks, it may be due to loose hinges. Tighten the hinge screws or replace them with longer ones for a stronger hold. Sometimes a light sanding on the edge of the door helps too.
Patching a Small Hole in Drywall
Use a putty knife to apply spackle or joint compound over the hole. Once dry, sand it smooth and touch up with paint. For holes larger than a quarter, use a mesh patch first.
Re-Caulking Around Windows
Old, cracked caulk lets in drafts. Remove the old caulk with a scraper, clean the area, then apply a fresh, clean bead with a caulking gun. Smooth it with your finger or a caulk tool.
Replacing a Light Switch
Turn off the power at the breaker. Remove the faceplate and switch screws. Disconnect the wires, connect them to the new switch (black to black, ground to ground), then screw everything back in and turn the power on.
Fixing a Leaky Faucet
A dripping faucet is often caused by a worn-out washer or O-ring. Turn off the water supply, disassemble the handle, and replace the damaged washer. Reassemble and turn the water back on—no more drip!
Pour a mix of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, let it fizz for 10-15 minutes, then flush with hot water. For tougher clogs, use a drain snake or plunger.
Cabinet hinges loosen over time. Tighten the screws or, if they’ve stripped the wood, use longer screws or insert toothpicks with wood glue into the hole before screwing back in.
Nail pops are small bumps where drywall nails have pushed out. Tap the nail in deeper, add a drywall screw above and below it, then patch and paint over.
